7. Medical Requirements, Waiver & Declaration
Mandatory Medical Acknowledgment: By paying the booking deposit, you confirm you have read, understood and accepted ALL medical terms in this section. This constitutes a binding medical declaration.
7.1 Dolma La Pass โ Critical Altitude Warning
The Kailash Parikrama crosses Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres (18,471 feet). At this altitude:
- Oxygen levels are approximately 50% of sea level โ equivalent to breathing through a cloth
- Risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) is significant and potentially fatal
- Temperature can drop to -15ยฐC to -25ยฐC with wind chill
- There is no hospital, clinic or emergency medical facility for many hours in any direction
- Even physically fit, healthy individuals can suffer altitude sickness without any prior warning signs
7.2 Evacuation Limitations โ Critical Understanding Required
You must fully understand and accept these evacuation realities before booking:
- Helicopter evacuation is NOT guaranteed โ altitude, cloud cover, wind and visibility frequently make helicopter operations impossible in this region for days at a time
- Ground evacuation from Dolma La to the nearest road takes a minimum of 8โ12 hours of trekking โ even for a person being carried
- The nearest hospital with oxygen and ICU facilities is in Pithoragarh or Dharchula โ a full day's journey from the Kailash region under normal conditions
- Helicopter evacuation costs โน2,00,000 to โน5,00,000 or more and must be paid in advance โ this is entirely at the traveller's expense
- Yatra Kailash guides carry basic first aid kits and supplemental oxygen canisters but are not qualified medical professionals
- In a medical emergency, the guide's primary duty is to get you to lower altitude โ all other services cease
7.3 Medical Fitness Declaration
By confirming your booking, you declare and warrant that:
- You have consulted a qualified doctor specifically about high-altitude trekking above 5,000m and received medical clearance
- You do not have โ without written medical clearance โ any of: heart disease, coronary artery disease, hypertension (BP above 140/90), chronic lung disease, COPD, asthma requiring daily medication, insulin-dependent diabetes, epilepsy, severe anaemia, pregnancy, recent surgery within 6 months, or any condition that impairs sustained physical exertion
- You are between 18 and 70 years of age โ travellers outside this age range require additional written medical clearance from a cardiologist or physician
- You have disclosed all medical conditions, medications and allergies to Yatra Kailash in writing before the yatra begins
- You will carry all prescribed medications plus a minimum 7-day additional supply
- You accept full and sole personal responsibility for your health, medical decisions and medical costs during and after the yatra
7.4 Right to Refuse or Evacuate
Yatra Kailash and its guides reserve the unconditional right to:
- Refuse participation to any traveller showing signs of serious altitude sickness, cardiac distress or any condition deemed medically dangerous โ even after arrival at Dharchula
- Require a traveller to descend immediately if their condition is dangerous โ this decision is final and overrides the traveller's personal wishes
- Remove any traveller from the group mid-yatra whose condition endangers themselves or the group
No refund will be issued for any unused portion of the yatra in cases of medical refusal or forced evacuation.
7.5 Mandatory Insurance
For the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, travel insurance is mandatory, not optional, and must include minimum coverage of:
- Emergency medical treatment including altitude sickness: โน5,00,000 minimum
- Helicopter evacuation: โน10,00,000 minimum (or USD 15,000 for international policies)
- Trip cancellation due to medical emergency or government restriction
- Repatriation of remains in case of death
Proof of insurance may be required before departure. Yatra Kailash bears no liability for any medical or evacuation costs under any circumstances.
8. Permits & Documentation
You are responsible for holding valid travel documents including:
- Valid Aadhaar card or passport (as applicable)
- Inner Line Permit (ILP) โ we assist in obtaining this
- Any other permits required by the Government of India or Uttarakhand state government
Yatra Kailash assists with permit processing but is not responsible for permits refused, delayed or cancelled by government authorities. Permit fees paid to government authorities are non-refundable.
9. Liability & Insurance
Yatra Kailash acts as an organiser and coordinator of yatra services. Our liability is limited to the total amount paid by you for the package.
We are not liable for:
- Personal injury, illness, death or property loss during the yatra
- Acts or omissions of third-party suppliers (hotels, transport, permits)
- Events beyond our reasonable control
- Losses arising from your failure to follow guide instructions or safety warnings
Travel insurance is strongly recommended. We advise all travellers to purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation, trip cancellation, altitude sickness and personal liability before departure.
10. Force Majeure & Operational Risks
Critical Notice for Kailash Mansarovar Yatris: The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra involves crossing into Tibet (China). This route is entirely subject to Chinese government approval and can be suspended or cancelled at any time without notice. Yatra Kailash has absolutely no control over Tibet/China border policies.
10.1 Tibet & China Border Closures
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra enters Tibet (China). The Chinese government may at any time and without prior notice:
- Suspend or cancel Tibet travel permits for Indian nationals entirely
- Close the Lipulekh Pass or Nathu La border crossing indefinitely
- Restrict pilgrim numbers, change quotas or cancel entire yatra seasons
- Impose new visa, documentation or health requirements
- Refuse entry to individual travellers without giving reasons
In the event of Tibet/China border closure or permit cancellation by Chinese authorities, Yatra Kailash will refund all recoverable costs. Permit fees already paid to government authorities are non-recoverable and non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance covering "trip cancellation due to government restrictions or border closure".
10.2 Landslides & Road Closures
The DharchulaโGunjiโLipulekh route passes through active landslide zones. Landslides may block roads for hours, days or weeks โ particularly during and after monsoon season (JulyโSeptember). Consequences include forced route changes, helicopter evacuation at the traveller's cost, or early termination. Yatra Kailash monitors road conditions daily and will communicate updates immediately.
10.3 Extreme Weather
Snowfall, blizzards, fog and high winds can occur without warning at elevations above 4,000m. Weather-related delays are beyond our control. We will make every effort to complete the yatra safely but cannot guarantee itinerary adherence when weather poses a safety risk.
10.4 Political Restrictions & Government Actions
The following are beyond our control and constitute force majeure:
- Suspension of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
- Restrictions by the Government of Uttarakhand or District Administration
- Army/ITBP security restrictions in the Indo-Tibet border zone
- Section 144 orders, curfews or security alerts in Pithoragarh or Dharchula
- Changes to Inner Line Permit (ILP) rules or quota restrictions
- Diplomatic tensions between India and China affecting border crossings
- Pandemics, epidemics or public health emergencies declared by government
In all force majeure cases, Yatra Kailash will refund all amounts paid minus non-recoverable third-party costs and will provide documentation for your travel insurance claim.
10.5 Our Commitment During Force Majeure
- Immediate notification via WhatsApp and email
- Free date change to next available departure where possible
- Refund of all recoverable costs within 14 business days
- Full documentation support for your travel insurance claim
