The Complete Route โ€” Delhi to Adi Kailash

Stage 1 โ€” Delhi to Pithoragarh (~485 km)

Most pilgrims depart Delhi by overnight Volvo bus or private vehicle to Haldwani / Kathgodam โ€” the railhead for Kumaon. From Kathgodam, the drive through Almora and Berinag to Pithoragarh takes another 5โ€“6 hours through beautiful Kumaon hill stations. Many yatras include a stop at Kainchi Dham (Neem Karoli Baba ashram) and the ancient Jageshwar Dham temples on this day.

Stage 2 โ€” Pithoragarh to Dharchula (~95 km)

The drive from Pithoragarh to Dharchula follows the dramatic Kali River gorge โ€” the river that forms the India-Nepal border. The road winds through stunning mountain scenery with Nepal visible across the river. Dharchula (915m) is the last major town before the restricted area begins. Inner Line Permits (ILP) must be obtained here at the SDM office before proceeding further.

Stage 3 โ€” Dharchula to Gunji (~55 km)

Beyond Dharchula, the road enters the Inner Line Permit zone. The drive passes through Tawaghat, Pangu, Napalchu and Sobla to reach Gunji (3,200m) โ€” the main ITBP checkpoint. This stretch has the most dramatic scenery of the entire journey โ€” deep river gorges, waterfalls and the Himalayan peaks coming into view. A Scorpio or Bolero is essential beyond Dharchula.

Stage 4 โ€” Gunji to Jolingkong, Adi Kailash (~20 km)

The final approach to Jolingkong (4,420m) is the roughest stretch โ€” rocky mountain track requiring 4WD. But as you arrive at Jolingkong, the sacred Adi Kailash peak (5,945m) โ€” the Chhota Kailash โ€” reveals itself in all its glory, along with the pristine Parvati Sarovar glacial lake at its base. The darshan here is deeply moving.
