Kathgodam Railway Station is the nearest major railhead to Dharchula. It is the last broad-gauge station before the Himalayan hills begin. From Kathgodam, it is approximately 8โ9 hours by road to Dharchula.
Tanakpur Railway Station is another option โ slightly closer to Dharchula (about 7 hours by road) via the Champawat route. Less crowded than Kathgodam.

Take NH-9. 3โ4 hours depending on traffic. NH-9 is a good 4-lane highway.

Moradabad โ Haldwani / Kathgodam (80 km)
Continue on NH-9. 1.5โ2 hours. Kathgodam is the last major town.

Kathgodam โ Almora (90 km)
Hill roads begin here. Takes about 2.5 hours. Scenic mountain route.

Almora โ Pithoragarh (100 km)
Continue on mountain roads. 3 hours. Last large town before Dharchula.

Final mountain stretch along the Kali River. 3โ4 hours.
Important Road Tips
Start Early from Delhi
Leave Delhi before 5 AM to avoid city traffic. Aim to reach Kathgodam or Haldwani by midday and continue same day.
4WD Recommended
Beyond Pithoragarh, mountain roads are narrow with sharp hairpin bends. 4WD vehicles are safer, especially in monsoon (JulyโAug).
Limited Phone Signal
Mobile signal is patchy between Pithoragarh and Dharchula. Download offline maps (Google Maps offline) before leaving Pithoragarh.
Avoid Night Driving
Do not drive mountain roads after dark. If starting late from Delhi, stop overnight in Haldwani or Almora and continue next morning.

Nearest airport โ about 280 km from Dharchula. Daily flights from Delhi. Then hire a taxi or take a bus to Kathgodam (30 min) and road to Dharchula.

Small airstrip with limited helicopter services from Dehradun. Not commercially operational on scheduled flights at this time. Check for updates.

If coming from outside Uttarakhand, fly to Delhi and then take an overnight train to Kathgodam. Most convenient for pilgrims from South India or abroad.

What is the best way to reach Dharchula from Delhi? +
The most comfortable option is an overnight train from Delhi to Kathgodam (Ranikhet Express or Kathgodam Express), arriving early morning, then a taxi or shared jeep to Dharchula. Total journey: 16โ18 hours. Alternatively, drive your own vehicle โ recommended only if you are comfortable with mountain roads.
Can I reach Dharchula directly by bus from Delhi? +
Yes. KMOU (Uttarakhand State Transport) runs overnight buses from Delhi's Anand Vihar bus terminal to Pithoragarh, with connection to Dharchula. Journey time is approximately 16โ18 hours. Book at the KMOU counter at Anand Vihar ISBT.
Is it safe to drive to Dharchula in the monsoon? +
The road is generally passable during monsoon (JulyโAugust) but landslides can cause temporary closures, especially between Pithoragarh and Dharchula. We recommend building an extra day into your itinerary and monitoring road conditions. Our team updates you daily.
Where should I stay overnight if I cannot complete the drive in one day? +
Almora and Pithoragarh both have good hotels. Pithoragarh is the better option โ it is closer to Dharchula and has the best selection of hotels before the final mountain stretch.
