Panchachuli — Five Cooking Fires
The five legendary peaks where the Pandavas cooked their last meal before ascending to heaven.
Five summits rise together above the Darma Valley in a perfect arc — Panchachuli I through V, ranging from 6,334m to 6,904m. In Hindu mythology, these are the five cooking hearths (chulhas) where the Pandavas cooked their final meal before beginning their journey to Svarga (heaven) at the end of the Mahabharata.
The Legend of the Five Fires
After the great Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas — Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva — renounced their kingdom and undertook their final journey northward through the Himalayas. At what is now called Panchachuli, they lit five fires, cooked their last earthly meal, and prepared for their ascent to heaven. The five peaks stand as eternal markers of this mythological moment.
The Darma Valley Trek
The Panchachuli Base Camp trek passes through the pristine Darma Valley — one of the least-visited valleys in Kumaon. The trail winds past ancient Bhotiya villages, glacial rivers, and alpine meadows before reaching the base camp at 3,855m. From here, all five peaks of Panchachuli are visible simultaneously — one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in India.
Best Combined With Munsiyari
The Panchachuli Base Camp trek pairs beautifully with a stay in Munsiyari — the 'Little Kashmir' of Uttarakhand. From Munsiyari's Khaliya Top, all five Panchachuli peaks can be seen at once, often mirrored in the high-altitude lake below. We offer combined Munsiyari-Panchachuli packages that give you the full Kumaon Himalayan experience.
