The Untold Story of Adi Kailash
The Indian Kailash that needs no Tibet permit — sacred, accessible, and breathtaking.
Tucked in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 5,945 metres, stands a peak so sacred that pilgrims have called it the twin of Mount Kailash in Tibet. Adi Kailash — also known as Chhota Kailash — is where Lord Shiva is believed to have meditated before the great Mahayatra.
Why Pilgrims Call It the True Kailash
Unlike the Tibetan Kailash which requires a foreign permit and crossing into China, Adi Kailash sits entirely in Indian territory. Yet its form — the distinctive pyramid shape, the glacial lake at its base (Parvati Sarovar), and the sacred Jolingkong meadow — mirrors Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet in uncanny detail. Ancient scriptures describe Adi Kailash as the original seat of Shiva.
The Route From Dharchula
We begin the yatra from Dharchula — our home town. The route follows the ancient Kailash Mansarovar Yatra path through Narayan Ashram, Sirkha, Malpa, Budhi, Gunji, Kalapani, and Jolingkong. At Jolingkong (4,572m), the base camp, you get the full frontal view of Adi Kailash — an experience that leaves pilgrims speechless.
Parvati Sarovar — The Sacred Lake
At the base of Adi Kailash lies Parvati Sarovar, a pristine glacial lake that mirrors the peak in its still waters. Pilgrims perform a ritual dip in the ice-cold lake — a moment of absolute stillness and devotion. The surrounding meadow blooms with Himalayan wildflowers in summer.
